For this I digital painting based on the animated movie, Kubo. In the movie there are twin aunts of the main character attempt to kill him for his eye. While the twins were defeated, I saw potential in them coming back for a next installment of Kubo. Before getting into detail, I'd like to say I had many ideas for a new villain for the movie. The sketches range from and un-dead sorcerer, and tormented tree creature, and the Japanese demon known as the oni. One thing about a few of them was the incorporation of the twin aunts noh masks which shattered into pieces when they died. I went from the idea of a mad amalgamation of the twins to having a more twisted form after they "revived." I took those ideas and made them into two more defined sketches and then a final sketch. The digital painting was a full color piece of Kubo's new nemesis, The Priestess. The story behind it is that a new monastery is built in Kubo's village dedicated to helping people with struggles in their lives. It is actually something much more sinister, run by a mysterious priestess. The priestess herself is made up of dozens of black vine like tendrils concealed under her robes and patchwork mask (The mask is the remains of the aunt's noh mask). Kubo must then find a way to defeat the priestess and expose her false Overall, I had a lot of fun with this and love to do some animation with this character.
